B Corp Collective Action
The Boston B Local board is collaborating with B Corps across New England to help coordinate collective action in places where a united B Corp voice can have a greater impact than we can have acting alone. We are collaborating with local NGO partners to support the amazing work they are already doing.
In alignment with the mission of the B Corp Climate Collective to address climate resiliency through advocacy, B Lab recently announced their partnership with Ceres, a sustainability nonprofit organization. Through working together, these organizations are hoping to elevate the role of advocacy in the community by bringing engagement opportunities to certified B Corps. We are now able to set up a local collaboration with Ceres to promote state level policies.
In our conversations with Ceres, we have learned that B Corps have a unique and important voice in state level advocacy. As part of the business community our voice carries extra weight and we can bring a strong principled voice for climate action interconnected with a drive for equity.
Our first collaboration with Ceres is to support Massachusetts net-zero legislation, requiring Massachusetts emission reductions to net-zero by 2050 and adopting the interim targets needed to meet this goal. The result was this sign-on letter sent to Massachusetts General Court on July 17th, 2020.
We are looking forward to continuing this partnership and providing further climate activism opportunities to MA B Corporations in the fall!

HISTORY
Eileen Fisher generously hosted our first collective action gathering in their beautiful store near the prudential center. At that meeting we sought to answer the question: How might collective action taken by B Corps allow us to have a greater positive impact in the world? Fifty B Corp leaders from companies across New England gathered with NGO partners to envision how we might act together. The result of the meeting was six working groups that each produced a well elaborated proposal for a way to test out collective action done by B Corps in early 2020.
Our second gathering was hosted by Impact Hub Boston and co-facilitated with Emily Hall Warren of W.S. Badger. At that meeting B Corps collaborated with our NGO partners to come up with specific plans for collective action to test in the first half of 2020. Two projects received support for execution first a climate lobby day in Boston and climate debate hosted central Mass. The second a project to support B Corps in communicating internally the value to the B.

COMING NEXT
A group of 15 B Corps, around Boston are looking for a better way to internally communicate how B Corps are Better for the World. Currently the group is researching different resources being used across B Corps, testing out new and improved elevator pitches, and making easy to understand one pagers with shared practices. Around April the team will be sharing their new and improved practices for other B Corps to adopt at an event. Details to come…
The plan for the rest of the year is as follows. The details are apt to change as we learn from our first round of collective action.
